Well, just as the marathon was one of the concluding events of the Olympic Games, we are now bringing our broadcast marathon to a close. Beyond the competitive drama, every Olympics provides a snapshot of a city and a country at a point in time.

This one was more compelling than most, since China's rise and its ongoing transformation is the global story, not only of the moment, but likely of the foreseeable future. These Olympics were a milestone in that still unfolding story. And while history will tell us whether or not the Olympics provided China with the confidence to not only build on its considerable strengths, but also to address its considerable problems. This much we know. This is a country so vast, a people with lives so varied and a history so rich and complex that no visitor can fully grasp it.

Still, of these Games, no advanced degree in international relations was required to appreciate the genuine warmth of the Chinese people, the honest pride in their country and how seriously Chinese citizens, famous Olympians, to everyday men and women, took this chance to show themselves to the world. All Olympics are important to the host city. These Games were monumentally important to the host nation, which happens to be home to 1/5 of humanity.

All that said, just as these Olympics were significant politically, they were also very significant competitively. Beijing turned out to be among the most memorable Olympics ever. One headline was anticipated before the Games began, and then verified here. For the first time since the fall of the Berlin Wall, an ongoing Olympic rivalry shapes up. In Beijing, the U.S. won 110 medals-the most it's ever won at a non-American Olympics. But China, second in the overall count, easily won the most golds here, and the most by any country since the old Soviet Union in 1988. Many of China's triumphs went beyond excellence. Their perfection and precision, simply beautiful to behold. China is now a sports power with a sophisticated state-supported sports system. They will be at or near the top of the medal list at London and beyond.

Meanwhile, the Americans had plenty to cheer about. Beach volleyball pairs both prevailing, Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson winning gold and winning hearts, the men's basketball team doing exactly what they set out to do-winning, yes-but also redeem and redefine the image and purpose of the U.S. program. These Games reached multiple crescendos. From the beginning, there was Michael Phelps, who now ranks among the very greatest Olympians ever and who is also now in the top tier of the best and most popular contemporary athletes in any sport-unheard of for a swimmer, until Phelps. Just about the time Phelps left the pool, a Jamaican jet zoomed over the track. The sprints are supposed to be decided by blinks of an eye, not by bolts of speed so astonishing that, like the  spectators, the competitors can only marvel at the world's-- and history's--fastest man. More nations, 204, participated here than in any Games before. And more won medals, 87, than ever before as well. But beyond the medal podium, the Olympics remain a human panorama, with many also-- ran finishes and first-round eliminations, nonetheless representing epic personal stories, only appreciated by the participants themselves and their families, friends and countrymen. Theses Games began with Zhang Yimou's stunning Opening Ceremony, so boldly conceived and brilliantly executed, that it set a standard for such occasions unlikely to be equaled. And tonight, with more theatrical touches, the curtain came down. So the people of the world came to Beijing, and the people of China extended their hands. You don't have to speak a word of Mandarin to understand that. I've been fortunate to be involved with many memorable Olympics, and in many ways, this has been the most memorable. In no small part, due to the efforts of the small army of people who worked tirelessly to bring these Games home to you. For these colleagues, I will always have enormous professional regard and personal gratitude. The names of these talented men and women accompany this final montage of the images of China and Olympic moments-moments we hope resonate with you as they have with us. 2001年夏， 北京申办奥运， 我在新东方K GRE. 结果揭晓那晚， 和两个朋友在北航对面'信息产业部的宾馆里看直播. 公布那一刻， 楼下有人扛着国旗就冲出去了... 电视里的首都万众欢腾.... 
我么？ 洗洗睡了....

那时一个阿姨对我兴奋地说：“你学的就是外语， 2008年的你风华正茂，可不正该为奥运会工作的大好时候？”，躺在床上的听者正塞着R.E.M的歌， 瞪着天花板，心中懵懵，居然无言以对 ---  8年太远   天知道我会在哪游荡...

出国前， 老板使出" 驴前吊萝卜"之招， 说08奥运正要靠我大展拳脚。 我去意已决， 只是暗自想着： 希望来得及..

忽而八年， 忽而今夏，身陷囹圄， 唯有隔岸观“火”， 唯有Bless， bless^&cheer for the  Beijing Olympics.

今天在外面好几次听到路人在说如何看直播， 各电视台也报道华裔群体把奥运当作喜庆之事在庆祝 ，老米打算今天结婚人数增加了200%....

开幕式估计看不了， 要早起作同传去....早知道不接这个活儿=—=

A magnitude - 5.8 earthquake has struck just east of Los Angeles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake's epicenter was about 2 miles southwest of Chino Hills and about 5 miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the USGS said. Chino Hills is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles.
The center was about 7.6 miles deep. In general, earthquakes centered closer to the Earth's surface produce stronger shaking and can cause more damage than those further underground.
A 5.8 magnitude quake is considered by the USGS to be "moderate," which can cause slight damage to buildings and others structures. About 500 can happen globally each year, the survey says.

Geez, Chino Hills (and 3.8 meg in Diamond Bar later), it is the nearest epicenter I 've ever approached to: about 7-10miles away.

I was cooking my lunch when this "wake-up call" occurred . In a sudden, my house trembling and the trees outside shaking---and the word "earthquake" jumped into my mind. Only wearing a mini pant (only dare to wear this at home....at least, it is not an "under" .. haha~~ ) and a sleeveless shirt, I slided out of the kichten to the backyard towards the Colima Blvd. Cars were passing by under my hill as usual. Having experienced quite a few times of mild earthquakes since I got here,I was not in panic but more of curiosity. While, the quake continued . Staring at the shivering world and hearing the tinkling of thr housewares, I could not help wondering "will it last long? wat happen if it become much stronger and devestating ? hmmm....It IS much more stronger than chunky me shake my house by my rope skipping ~~ oh ... it ll be funny to be buried with such short pants on...=_= .."

I went upstairs when everthing calmed down except for the chiming wind bells.TV channels had begun the live broadcasting about the earthquake: no damage reported so far. My at&t cell connection paralyzed (have not checked my Sprint one) for a while. No calls in , no calls out. I sent a text and did not get response till 90 mins later . I chatted with some friends in the area via MSN and everbody is ok.

The official speaker,a lady professor from Caltech noted " it was a fairly strong earthquake."

That is ok.

Soft-power competition is the next playing venue for all the nations.  The so-called "free Tibet"riots and protesting campaign followed by bashing from the "main stream" media and some governments is a schemed trap conspired by those who are intimidated by the rising of China. Teaming with the "made in China" credibility crisis , it has become the first round  challenge in soft power that  China is confronting.  Noticeably, numerous anti-China comments shown via mass media (call-ins, website comments, media professionals' reporting tendency )are refleting this pervasive emotion among the common non-Chinese people who are stimulated by their "propaganda" and their deep-rooted concern, which the later is a case similar  to the rising of Japan in the 1970's and the 1980's . They are so uncomfortable and  hating a new competitor as it is esp. annoying when the competitor is red in their eyes.  (Sigh...red? r u kidding?) 

 Chinese people are on the long way in building a better society and we may have problems in many facets, while which country is an exception ?  It is the Chinese people's own business and nothing to do with those outsiders who even do not know Tibet's position or the history.

Tibetan area has been developed greatly in its culture, eduation, economy and infrastructure during the past years and I wonder what good and substantial things those seperatists have done to Tibet? Dalai -Liar, the head of the former slave owners, some Tibetan growing up abroad who are the descendents of the exiled slave-owners, some non-Tibetans who are brainwashed by their media annd governments, some political speculators and some hired vocational protesters are actually puppets manipulated by the hands behind. Against Human rights? Genocide? So ironical! God knows who have been practicing those atrocities in other countries for their own purposes all along.  Dalai Lair, the Nobel Peace Prize winner,  can you explain your disiples'  killing and uprising in the Lhasa, Chengdu city and Gansu province ,and the violence done to the Olympic torch relay (for example, to the handicapped torch bearer in Paris)??    It is so shamful, malicious and venomous to mingle politial purposes and violence with Olympic games by the self-advoate human rights supporters.  Anyone who is infringing the safety of the citizens,  stability of a society, the independence of a soverignty and integrality of the Olympic spirits , is the real criminal against the rights of all human-beings. .  

The situation is harsh and realistic .It may be the first phase of the whole plan of impairing the Chinese image. We all know the rule of  "A lie repeated thousands of times , it becomes the truth".  Hope the would-be-long-term challenge can be a warning and lesson for the Chinese government to realize that they are  in urgent demand of long-term PR strategies, branding campaigns  and capability of crisis management .  Chinese people（with 56 ethnicities including Tibetan ,  Uygurian, Mongolian,  Korean, Austronesian and so on） did not ever and will never surrender to the malign and distorted media coverage, the denigrading criticism by the foreign politicians or the boycott.

I still could not help saying :Shame on CNN--CIA News Network, France, Germany, UK and all those pity followers of the S P.  Humiliating others is humiliating yourself.
